Yiwei Zhang is a criminal defence lawyer and former Assistant Crown Attorney with the Ontario Ministry of the Attorney General. Yiwei Zhang Criminal Defence is committed to providing clear, predictable legal fees. For the majority of criminal matters, we utilize a stage-based Block Fee model. This approach ensures you maintain complete control over your financial budget throughout every phase of the proceedings, eliminating the unpredictability associated with traditional hourly billing.
Base Pre-Trial Block Fee: This encompasses all standard pre-trial preparation. It includes the review of initial and subsequent disclosure, conducting Crown Pre-Trials (CPT) and Judicial Pre-Trials (JPT), handling routine court appearances and remands, and engaging in resolution negotiations (including negotiations for withdrawals, peace bonds, or plea resolutions).
Specific Phase Fees: Should your case require specific, complex procedures—such as a Bail Hearing (consent or contested) or Pre-Trial Applications & Motions (e.g., Charter applications for unreasonable delay or unlawful search)—we provide explicit, fixed quotes for these individual phases.
Trial Per Diem: In the event that a resolution cannot be reached outside of court and the matter proceeds to a formal trial, a fixed daily rate (Per Diem Block Fee) will apply.
Trust & ComplianceIn strict accordance with Law Society of Ontario (LSO) By-Law 9, all retainer funds provided by clients are deposited directly into Lumen LLP’s Mixed Trust Account. These funds remain your property until the corresponding legal services have been rendered and a formal statement of account is issued. To ensure financial security and prevent fraud, we exclusively accept payments via wire transfer, certified cheque, or bank draft made payable to "Lumen LLP, In Trust".
